Season Dates:

Hermit Lake Shelters include 5 three-sided shelters, 3 four-sided shelters, and 3 tent platforms for a total accommodation of 86 people. A caretaker is on duty at the cabin year-round mornings and evenings. Weather forecast, seasonal avalanche report, and hiker register are available in the caretaker cabin lobby. Emergency supplies and 10 Essentials are available for sale at the cabin when staffed.
In summer potable water is available from a hand-pump located on the Tuckerman Ravine Trail. Flush toilets are open all summer. In the winter potable water is generally available by hand-pump. Water from the Cutler River should be chemically treated, filtered, or boiled before use. Outhouses are available in winter, spring, and fall.
Prepare and cook meals at your shelter or tent site using backpacking stoves. Dry wells are located at each site and are only for washing dishes.
All commercial group trips heading into the White Mountain National Forest need to apply for an Outfitter Guide Permit from the US Forest Service. Please contact the WMNF Permit Administrator at (603) 536-6136 or email [email protected]. Maximum group size is 10 people traveling and camping together.
