Priorities

Conservation is in our roots. But it’s not enough to simply safeguard what exists.

We believe that the outdoors needs a voice. We lead regional conservation and recreation initiatives, and we advocate for science-based policies that advance clean energy, air and water quality, and land protection. AMC works with decision makers, federal and state agencies, and many recreation and conservation partners on landscape-scale conservation initiatives and policies and local solutions to promote the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the mountains, forests, waters, and trails of America’s Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.

Climate Change

Clean energy, clean air, and healthy forests and waters are core focus areas for AMC. To preserve the integrity and health of our finite open spaces and public lands, we must reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and large-scale centralized energy generation and distribution.

Lands and Trails

AMC’s approach to land and trail protection focuses on ensuring conservation values are upheld while integrating high-quality public recreation opportunities and in some places timber management. In this approach, AMC works collaboratively with land managers and communities in the regions we call home while working toward more equitable access to nature for all.

Forests and Water

Through AMC’s Maine Woods Initiative, our Forest Stewardship Council® FSC®-C008922 certified responsible forestry ensures we're tackling climate change while balancing timber management with backcountry recreation, land conservation, and community economic development. Throughout our region, our advocacy efforts promote protection of critical large watersheds and our long-term monitoring of air and water quality provide vital data that underpin science-based policy aimed at protecting northeastern freshwaters.
