Approaches

Leading the way for a more sustainable future.

AMC is actively engaged in conservation and research across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions of the US, helping to ensure the future enjoyment of the outdoors for all. Our aim is to create a culture of active conservation to help protect these resources and encourage participation through a multi-tiered approach that includes a vibrant membership base, a team of scientists and policy advocates, land and water protection initiatives, and passionate trail maintenance crews. Science

Science matters, especially when it comes to the fight against climate change. Our dedicated staff of research scientists work to understand how air and water pollution affect the natural world and determine ways to protect the vital ecosystems where we recreate. Through the monitoring of air quality, studying the fragile alpine zones, forests, and freshwaters in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, and researching the effects of climate change, the work of AMC’s scientists supports our goals of achieving net zero carbon emissions no later than 2050 and preserving these resources for future generations.

Advocacy

At AMC, we believe the outdoors deserves a voice. Working with decision makers, federal and state agencies, and many recreation and conservation partners, AMC leads in the protection of vital outdoor spaces in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, from large-scale land conservation efforts in the Maine Woods, to protecting important landscapes like the Mid-Atlantic Highlands, and the Connecticut and Delaware River watersheds for future generations to enjoy. Our regional conservation and recreation initiatives inform our science-based policy positions that promote clean energy, air and water quality, and land protection.

Protection

AMC prioritizes innovative solutions to protecting and preserving the vital resources found in the forests of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. By balancing conservation, responsible forestry, and recreation to help ensure a more sustainable future, AMC is modelling a land management approach in Maine that aids in the fight against climate change. AMC’s Maine Woods Initiative (MWI) incorporates backcountry recreation, land conservation, and community economic development with responsible timber management and carbon sequestration as a key element of the project, serving as a “green endowment” to help offset the costs of owning the land and supporting other MWI conservation programs.

Join AMC's Conservation Action Network (CAN)

Hard science, focused advocacy, and a whole lot of hands-on work have defined AMC’s conservation mission from the beginning. But it’s your support that carries the day in community meeting houses, in Congress, and in untrammeled wilderness alike. Sign up for our CAN newsletter to learn more about our conservation initiatives and how you can contribute.
